Request an Appointment

The Glenn Family Breast Center at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University offers different paths to care based on where you are in your diagnosis. If you or a loved one have been recently diagnosed with breast cancer or you are seeking a second opinion, please contact (404) 778-PINK (778-7465) to make an appointment with a breast cancer specialist.

To request an appointment for a mammogram, call (404) 778-PINK (778-7465) to speak with a scheduling coordinator.

We understand that this is a very stressful time. We welcome your questions and requests for help. Here is more information to help familiarize you with Winship and give you an idea of what to expect on your first visit.

Breast cancer is often first suspected when a lump is felt or when an abnormal area is found on a mammogram. Most of the time, these suspicious areas do not turn out to be cancer, but the only way to know for sure is through follow-up tests.

At Emory Breast Imaging Center, we support the American College of Radiology and Society of Breast Imaging recommendations that stress the importance of yearly mammograms and breast awareness for ALL women beginning at age 40. Operated by Emory Healthcare, our center provides mammography, ultrasound and other screening options for the detection of breast tumors and lesions.

Breast imaging has greatly enhanced the successful diagnosis and treatment of cancer in its earliest stages. Regular mammography screenings can detect breast cancer up to two years before you feel it. Early detection increases the likelihood of successful treatment and offers the best chance of survival.

Emory Breast Imaging Center offers diagnostic mammography, or tomosynthesis, using state-of-the art 3-D technology.

Our center offers an array of diagnostic testing including:

Your doctor should determine which diagnostic method or methods would be best for you.

To request an appointment for a mammogram, call (404) 778-PINK (778-7465) to speak with a scheduling coordinator.

The choice of a particular treatment should be based on a good understanding of all the options and how each relates to a woman's personal values and lifestyle.

Our team takes the time to get to know you as a patient and explain your diagnosis and treatment options. The goal of treating breast cancer is to eliminate the cancer from the body as completely as possible and prevent it from returning. This is usually done with a combination of surgery, radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy and hormone therapy.

  • Targeted therapy: using drugs to target specific genetic changes in cells that cause breast cancer.
  • Surgery: Breast conserving surgery (also known as partial mastectomy, lumpectomy, wide excision, or excisional biopsy) along with radiation therapy is the standard of care in the treatment of most women with stage I or II breast cancer. Mastectomy is surgery to remove the entire breast along with other nearby tissue. Learn about surgery for breast cancer.
  • Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery: Oncoplastic breast conserving surgery combines breast cancer surgery and breast reconstructive surgery during the same operation. Working together, a breast cancer surgeon and a plastic surgeon remove the cancerous tumor and immediately reconstruct the defect and reshape the breast using the patient's own tissue. Learn about plastic surgery for breast cancer.
  • Hormone therapy: most often used after surgery to reduce the risk of the cancer coming back.
  • Radiation therapy: often given after breast conserving surgery to help lower the risk of a recurrence. Learn about radiation therapy for breast cancer.
  • Proton beam therapy: Proton therapy is the next generation of radiation oncology. It uses protons to precisely treat cancerous tumors throughout the body and can be more precise than conventional forms of radiation treatment. The Emory Proton Therapy Center is the only center of its kind in Georgia to offer patients access to this advanced form of radiation therapy. Learn about proton therapy for breast cancer.
  • Chemotherapy: given to shrink a tumor before surgery or after surgery if you have a large tumor or lymph node positive disease. You may get this intravenously (IV) or orally, depending on the stage of your cancer. Your doctor will determine if chemotherapy is needed before or after surgery. Learn about breast oncology care.

Each patient's treatment regimen is unique and depends on many factors. Our breast cancer team will work with you to design a treatment plan that addresses your individual needs and preferences.

Supportive Oncology Care

In addition to delivering the highest quality medical care, we recognize the importance of the psychological and emotional aspects of living with a cancer diagnosis and of dealing with treatment. Our supportive oncology team addresses these issues in a timely manner with additional support from counselors, nurse navigators, dietitians, lymphedema therapists, and social service professionals.

Consider talking with your doctor about participating in a clinical trial for patients with breast cancer. Through these trials, you may have access to treatments that are not widely available.
