Breast Cancer

When you come to Winship Cancer Institute for breast cancer treatment, you have a multidisciplinary team of experts dedicated to your well-being.

Our nationally recognized breast healthcare team delivers state-of-the-art treatment in caring for our breast cancer patients. Our experts draw upon Emory's vast resources to bring together a multidisciplinary team of specialists in medical, surgical and radiation oncology, plastic surgery, breast imaging and pathology.

Our comprehensive care teams also include patient navigators, oncology nurses and social workers. These teams develop personalized care plans based on the most current discoveries in breast cancer treatment and research.

By concentrating on a specific cancer type, our teams offer you the highest level of experience and expertise in breast cancer care. Our patients take an active part in their treatment plan with access to the entire treatment team. Benefits of our team approach include:

  • Access to the Glenn Family Breast Center at Winship.
  • 3-D mammography services at three Emory locations including Winship.
  • Breast tissue tumor bank and extensive scientific research.
  • Weekly review of patient cases by the full team of experts.
  • Coordinated scheduling for appointments among various specialties.
  • Access to our high risk assessment clinic, and genetic counseling and testing.
  • Access to a nurse navigator to assist you throughout the treatment process.
  • Access to support groups and education classes for you and your caregivers.
  • Availability of new treatment options within our clinical trials program.

Breast cancer is often first suspected when a lump is felt or when an abnormal area is found on a mammogram. Most of the time, these suspicious areas do not turn out to be cancer, but the only way to know for sure is through follow-up tests.

The Emory Breast Imaging Center provides mammography and other screening options for the detection of breast tumors and lesions. Breast imaging has greatly enhanced the successful diagnosis and treatment of cancer in its earliest stages. Our center offers an array of diagnostic testing including:

  • Diagnostic mammography, or tomosynthesis, using state-of-the art 3-D technology
  • Ultrasound breast imaging
  • MRI
  • Biopsy

Your doctor should determine which diagnostic method or methods would be best for you.

The choice of a particular treatment should be based on a good understanding of all the options and how each relates to a woman's personal values and lifestyle.

The goal of treating breast cancer is to eliminate the cancer from the body as completely as possible and prevent it from returning. This is usually done with a combination of surgery, radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy and hormone therapy.

Targeted therapy: using drugs to target specific genetic changes in cells that cause breast cancer.

Surgery: Breast conserving surgery (also known as partial mastectomy, lumpectomy, wide excision, or excisional biopsy) along with radiation therapy is the standard of care in the treatment of most women with stage I or II breast cancer. Mastectomy is surgery to remove the entire breast along with other nearby tissue.

Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery: Oncoplastic breast conserving surgery combines breast cancer surgery and breast reconstructive surgery during the same operation. Working together, a breast cancer surgeon and a plastic surgeon remove the cancerous tumor and immediately reconstruct the defect and reshape the breast using the patient's own tissue.

Hormone therapy: most often used after surgery to reduce the risk of the cancer coming back.

Radiation therapy: often given after breast conserving surgery to help lower the risk of a recurrence. Learn more about radiation therapy treatments and services.

Chemotherapy: cancer-killing drugs given intravenously or by mouth before surgery to help shrink a breast cancer tumor or after surgery to help reduce the risk of recurrence.

Each patient's treatment regimen is unique and depends on many factors. Our breast cancer team will work with you to design a treatment plan that addresses your individual needs and preferences.

In addition to delivering the highest quality medical care, we recognize the importance of the psychological and emotional aspects of living with a cancer diagnosis and of dealing with treatment. Our supportive oncology team addresses these issues in a timely manner with additional support from counselorsnurse navigatorsdietitians and social service professionals.

Consider talking with your doctor about participating in a clinical trial at Winship. Through these trials, you may have access to treatments that are not widely available.
